A search has been initiated following the escape of a prisoner from an open facility during the period between Christmas and Boxing Day. Mahad Elmi, aged 27, did not return to HMP Springhill in Buckinghamshire after departing either overnight or in the early hours of Friday. Thames Valley Police stated that Elmi is now considered “unlawfully at large” and should not be approached by the public. Descriptions note him as a black male, approximately 5ft 8in tall, of medium stature, with medium-length black hair, a beard, and brown eyes. Elmi is known to have connections in south-west London.
Detective Sergeant Matthew French, from the Priority Crime Team, appealed to the public for assistance in locating Elmi, emphasizing the need to contact authorities if he is spotted and to refrain from approaching him. In case of any information regarding Elmi’s whereabouts, individuals are urged to reach out by calling 101 or submitting online reports, referencing the code 43250653119.
HMP Springhill, classified as a Category D open prison for men with low security measures, permits eligible inmates to leave for work or educational purposes during the day. The facility can accommodate roughly 335 prisoners, according to reports from MyLondon.
