Trump Shifts Stance on Putin’s Claim of Ukrainian Drone Attack

Donald Trump has made a significant change in his stance regarding Russian President Vladimir Putin’s accusations of a Ukrainian drone strike on one of his properties. This shift follows a CIA briefing that found no evidence to support the claims. The US-led peace talks on the Ukraine conflict are under increasing pressure. Initially reacting with anger to the alleged attack, President Trump has now raised doubts about the claims by sharing a critical editorial from the New York Post on Truth Social.

The editorial, titled “Putin ‘attack’ bluster shows Russia is the one standing in the way of peace,” accused the Kremlin of fabricating the incident to disrupt diplomatic efforts. By reposting this article, Trump has made a notable reversal in his position, marking his most recent public statement on the matter as of early January 1.

The conflict began after Putin asserted during a December 29 phone call with Trump that Ukraine had launched over 90 drones at a location in the Novgorod region. While addressing the media at Mar-a-Lago on the same day alongside Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, Trump expressed his displeasure with the claim, stating, “I am very angry about the claim. This is not the right time.”

Trump differentiated between standard military operations and an attack on Putin’s residence, emphasizing the seriousness of the latter. Despite initially considering Putin’s account, a CIA assessment presented by Director John Ratcliffe on December 31 concluded that Ukraine was not targeting the Russian leader’s residence. The intelligence indicated that the drones were aimed at a nearby military facility that had been previously struck, with no indication of an intention to target personal properties.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky refuted the accusation, calling it a complete fabrication. While Russian officials released footage of downed drones, they provided no evidence linking them to Putin’s residence. The Kremlin reported intercepting 91 drones without causing any harm.

The incident occurred amidst escalating reciprocal drone attacks. On December 31, the Russian-installed Kherson governor Vladimir Saldo alleged that Ukrainian drones had targeted a cafe and hotel in the occupied village of Khorly, resulting in casualties. However, Ukrainian officials have not confirmed their involvement, and independent verification is lacking.

EU officials, along with the US, expressed doubts and condemned any attacks on civilians while advocating for de-escalation. The ongoing strikes, with Ukraine targeting Russian oil facilities and Moscow retaliating against Odesa, underscore the challenges in diplomatic efforts. Trump’s change in stance could strain US-Russia relations, although he has refrained from further comments.

The White House declined requests for clarification, but internal sources suggest that the CIA’s evidence, which indicates no intent to target, prompted the reassessment. With peace negotiations stalled, this episode highlights the complexities of information conflicts in times of war.
