“Conservative Lord Faces Backlash for Ties to Abramovich”

A Conservative party member in a prominent position is facing criticism for serving as legal counsel to Russian billionaire Roman Abramovich. The Ukraine Solidarity Campaign has expressed concern over Lord David Wolfson’s involvement. The UK government is seeking over £2.5 billion from Abramovich, earmarked to support Ukraine.

Abramovich is entangled in a legal dispute with the Jersey government regarding the origin of assets totaling more than £5.3 billion held in Jersey. Recently, Keir Starmer issued a warning to Abramovich, threatening legal action if the proceeds from the sale of Chelsea are not surrendered.

Lord Wolfson has been engaged in the Jersey case. It is reported that Abramovich is contending that the asset transfer for the benefit of Ukraine must wait until the Jersey proceedings conclude.

The USC has cast doubt on the decision of a Shadow Cabinet member to take on such a case without party leadership’s knowledge or consent. They question whether this signals a return to normal relations with Russia by the Conservatives amid potential Trump-Putin peace efforts.

The USC has urged the government to enact urgent legislation preventing sanctioned individuals from exploiting the UK legal system to delay accountability, emphasizing the priority of victims of Russian aggression over oligarchs’ privileges.

Following sanctions in 2022 due to alleged ties to Vladimir Putin, Abramovich sold Chelsea FC. The funds intended for humanitarian purposes related to the Ukraine conflict are currently held in a UK bank account due to a legal standoff. Abramovich aims for these funds to benefit all victims of the war, including Russians.

In a letter to Conservative leader Kemi Badenoch, Labour Justice Minister Jake Richards raised concerns about Lord Wolfson’s dual role. He emphasized the conflict of interest posed by Lord Wolfson representing Abramovich while also advising on matters related to government policies.

The Tories clarified that Lord Wolfson is not involved in the Chelsea FC issue and dismissed Labour’s criticism as politically motivated. They reiterated the importance of barristers acting for clients and not causes.

The Conservative Party reaffirmed its support for Ukraine and criticized Labour for perceived hypocrisy, highlighting their own Attorney General’s past legal representations. They emphasized their commitment to Ukraine’s cause and denounced Labour’s accusations as baseless.
