Mathew Horne, best known for his role in the popular BBC comedy drama Gavin and Stacey, recently shared the heartbreaking story of his former girlfriend’s battle with leukemia that led to her passing. The actor described the period as an immensely sorrowful time.
In a candid conversation with broadcaster Gyles Brandreth on the Boxing Day episode of the Rosebud podcast, Mathew reflected on the challenging experience when his ex-partner was diagnosed with the illness. He fondly referred to her as an “amazing girl” and revealed that their relationship evolved from a close friendship to a romantic connection.
Tragically, the woman succumbed to leukemia shortly after her diagnosis in 2003, passing away by January 2004. Mathew expressed deep sadness over the loss, emphasizing that despite not being in a relationship with her at the time of her death, the bond they shared made it a difficult period for him.
Leukemia, a form of blood cancer, affects the immune system by impacting bone marrow cells. Mathew eventually found love again with his current wife, Celina Bassili, whom he married in 2021. The couple exchanged vows in a heartfelt ceremony in Norway, as shared with their followers on Instagram.
Prior to marrying Celina, Mathew had a brief engagement with Casualty actress Evelyn Hoskins. However, his connection with Celina grew stronger over time, especially during a challenging period following his mother’s passing. This led to a deepening of their relationship, culminating in their decision to spend their lives together.
