Investigations are underway into the practices of eight companies regarding their online pricing strategies, with an additional 100 businesses expected to receive warnings. The companies under scrutiny include StubHub, Viagogo, AA Driving School, BSM Driving School, Gold’s Gym, Wayfair, Appliances Direct, and Marks Electrical.
The Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) is focusing its investigations on how fees are displayed online, potential misrepresentation of time-limited offers, and the automatic inclusion of optional charges without customer consent. Specific inquiries involve StubHub and Viagogo for additional charges on ticket purchases, AA Driving School and BSM Driving School for fee transparency on their websites, Gold’s Gym for its one-off joining fee presentation during membership sign-up, Wayfair for time-limited sales, Marks Electrical for default opt-ins, and Appliances Direct for their use of time-limited sales and default opt-ins.
The CMA has stated that these investigations are based on suspicions of consumer law violations and emphasized that no final decisions have been reached yet. These cases mark the initiation of enforcement actions using the CMA’s new consumer protection powers, with the authority also reaching out to 100 other businesses regarding concerns over additional fees and sales tactics.
CMA’s chief executive, Sarah Cardell, highlighted the importance of ensuring transparent pricing and fair deals for consumers across various sectors, expressing the watchdog’s commitment to eradicating illegal practices and safeguarding consumer interests. Statements from the companies under investigation, including AA Driving School and Viagogo, indicate willingness to cooperate with the CMA’s inquiries.
The Mirror has sought comments from Gold’s Gym, Wayfair, Marks Electrical, and Appliances Direct, while noting that BSM Driving School is a subsidiary of AA and Viagogo and StubHub share a common parent company.
