“UK households shifting to internet-based TV by mid-2030s”

Millions of households in the UK are already utilizing the internet for live and on-demand content consumption. Recent findings from a report sponsored by Sky indicate a potential shift towards internet-based TV services for the majority of British households by the mid-2030s. This transition could lead to the retirement of traditional terrestrial TV distribution methods like Freeview.

Various alternatives to aerial-based TV viewing already exist, including streaming options from Sky and the newly introduced Freely service, which shares ownership with Freeview. Freely, integrated into many modern televisions, provides access to both live and on-demand programming through a broadband connection.

As more internet-connected devices enter homes, traditional broadcast TV viewership is declining, with a growing number of households opting for streaming services.

Another challenge facing Freeview is the potential sharing of radio frequencies with mobile operators after 2031, affecting the current over-the-air transmission system’s sustainability. The maintenance costs of the existing infrastructure are escalating, prompting discussions within the UK government about future strategies.

Nick Herm, Sky’s Group Chief Operating Officer, highlighted the potential of internet-delivered TV to enhance social inclusion. He emphasized the feasibility of a full transition to internet-based TV by the 2030s, emphasizing its role in narrowing the digital divide and generating substantial cost savings compared to maintaining legacy systems.

While some embrace the shift towards streaming, there are concerns raised by a petition with over 100,000 signatures opposing the discontinuation of Freeview. The petition highlights the potential challenges faced by households, particularly regarding the need for a stable and costly internet connection for streaming services.

Lynette, an 80-year-old resident of Kent, expressed her reliance on Freeview for entertainment, news, and learning opportunities, emphasizing her preference for traditional TV viewing over digital alternatives.

Updates on the future of television services are anticipated in the near future.
