“Study: 1 in 4 Employed Parents Seek Emergency Food Aid”

A recent study revealed that almost 25% of employed parents resorted to emergency food assistance over the past year. Findings from The Felix Project, a food redistribution charity, indicated that 10% of these parents had to cope with their child going hungry weekly, while 9% admitted to sending their hungry child to school.

The study surveyed 4,000 working parents with children under the age of 16 at home, revealing that 23% had utilized food banks, with a quarter of them relying on these services every one or two weeks. Rachel Ledwith, the Head of Community at The Felix Project, expressed concern over the distressing reality of children experiencing hunger regularly and emphasized the crucial role of food banks in preventing widespread hunger.

The charity estimated that more than 1.7 million parents in the UK have turned to food banks for support. The Felix Project collects surplus food and distributes it to approximately 1,200 organizations in London, including food banks, homeless shelters, community centers, and schools. The survey also highlighted that 13% of parents using food banks had been doing so for over a year.

To address the escalating demand, The Felix Project is merging with FareShare, a national organization that supplies food to 8,000 charities, providing the equivalent of 148 million meals last year. Testimonials from struggling parents like Edith and Jane shed light on the financial challenges many families face, with limited resources often leading to difficult decisions and emotional hardships.

Rod Williams, the managing director of Crest Cooperative in North Wales, recounted instances where individuals, including part-time workers and parents, grapple with financial constraints, particularly during festive seasons. The increasing need for support has prompted initiatives like evening sessions to accommodate those struggling to make ends meet, reflecting the pressing issue of food insecurity among working families in various communities.
