Fire TV Stick users need to exercise caution when adding new applications to their devices amid recent developments. The well-known tool “Downloader” has been removed from Amazon’s Appstore, paving the way for a fraudulent copycat application designed to scam users.
The issue arose when Downloader disappeared from Amazon’s online marketplace over the weekend. This tool, available for almost a decade, enabled Fire TV owners to search for and install apps not found on official platforms, useful for accessing tools unavailable in certain regions or early versions of software.
Despite its popularity, Downloader faced a temporary suspension due to a recent update categorizing it as a full web browser, against Amazon’s policy on third-party browsers for Fire TV devices. The app’s developer, Elias Saba, running the Fire TV site AFTVnews, is working on an update to rectify this issue promptly.
Meanwhile, a fake version of Downloader has emerged, aiming to deceive Fire TV users into paying a weekly fee. Saba warns against installing this fake app and advises reporting it to Amazon. Users with the legitimate Downloader installed should not delete it, as reinstallation will not be possible until Amazon reinstates it.
If the update is approved, Downloader could make a comeback on Fire TV devices soon, pending Amazon’s review. Users are advised to stay vigilant during this period of uncertainty.
