Russian Intelligence Targets UK MPs with WhatsApp Scams

Russian intelligence agencies are reportedly targeting Members of Parliament through deceptive WhatsApp scams, as warned by intelligence officials. Commons Speaker Sir Lindsay Hoyle has cautioned MPs about increasing phishing attempts aimed at extracting sensitive information or compromising their accounts, allegedly orchestrated by Kremlin-affiliated agents.

The National Cyber Security Centre (NCSC) has advised MPs against using informal messaging applications like WhatsApp and Signal for official Parliamentary communication. The NCSC has emphasized the importance of enhancing online security measures for MPs, following a previous warning concerning threats from Chinese intelligence services.

In response, the National Cyber Security Centre (NCSC) is collaborating with the Government and Parliament to address the issue. Government representatives have highlighted that spear-phishing, a tactic commonly used by threat actors to access confidential information and online accounts, has targeted commercial messaging apps such as Signal and WhatsApp. They have encouraged high-risk individuals to adhere to NCSC guidance and utilize cyber defense services for added protection.

Security Minister Dan Jarvis has reiterated the government’s commitment to combating foreign interference, particularly in safeguarding democratic institutions. He mentioned the Foreign Office’s proactive stance against Russian threats aimed at undermining democratic processes and disseminating deceptive content. Jarvis also raised concerns about Chinese intelligence officers posing as entities or recruiters on platforms like LinkedIn to gather sensitive information from MPs, Lords, and Parliamentary staff.

Jarvis emphasized China’s efforts to recruit individuals with access to valuable information, cautioning that Chinese actors have a broad definition of valuable data. He disclosed that MI5 issued an espionage alert to MPs and Parliamentary staff regarding ongoing Chinese targeting of democratic institutions. Intelligence agencies have identified Chinese intelligence officers using cover companies or external headhunters to conceal their activities.
