Rory McIlroy has clinched the title of Sports Personality of the Year 2025. The golfer stole the show at the closing ceremony in Salford on Thursday.
McIlroy emerged as the frontrunner for the award, securing his first Masters victory and becoming the inaugural European player to achieve golf’s prestigious Grand Slam. His remarkable individual triumph was followed by a pivotal role in Team Europe’s triumph at the Ryder Cup on American soil.
The Northern Irish golf sensation outshone F1 star Lando Norris, who secured the third spot. Norris, aged 26, recently clinched the Formula 1 drivers’ championship in a thrilling manner.

The Sports Personality of the Year event also saw the presence of England’s Lionesses, with goalkeeper Hannah Hampton and Chloe Kelly nominated for the award. Darts prodigy Luke Littler was also in contention but narrowly missed out on both the main award and the Young Sports Personality trophy.
In an emotional speech, McIlroy expressed gratitude to the public, his family, and his wife and daughter who could not attend the ceremony. McIlroy’s wife and daughter were in the US during the event.
Littler, who expressed disappointment at not winning any awards, highlighted his dedication to practicing for the ongoing PDC World Darts Championship. Despite missing out on the awards, Littler remains focused on defending his world championship title.
