On a summer evening in June 2022, a tragic incident occurred when two sixteen-year-old boys attacked my son, Ronan, as he walked home. They viciously stabbed him with a 22-inch ninja sword, inflicting fatal wounds to his abdomen and heart.
The perpetrators had acquired the deadly weapon online using a fake ID, raising concerns about the unrestricted sale of such dangerous items. I was appalled by the lack of accountability among retailers who market weapons designed for harm and violence.
Meeting with Sir Keir Starmer, then Leader of the Opposition, I was initially skeptical of politicians but found solace in his genuine empathy for my cause. He pledged to address the issue by banning ninja swords if he assumed power, a promise that has since been fulfilled by the Prime Minister under the Labour Government.
Collaborating with government officials, I advocated for Ronan’s Law, which not only prohibits ninja swords but also imposes hefty fines on tech platforms that host knife-related content and penalizes retailers selling knives to minors. Enhanced ID verification processes have been implemented to ensure compliance.
The government’s proactive measures, including the successful knife surrender initiative launched alongside Ronan’s Law, have significantly curtailed the online weapons trade. By partnering with organizations like FazAmnesty, thousands of dangerous weapons, including ninja swords, have been voluntarily surrendered.
Notably, a dedicated amnesty bin in Wolverhampton stands as a tribute to Ronan’s memory, symbolizing the tangible impact of our collective efforts in reducing knife-enabled crimes. The government’s comprehensive approach, exemplified by the Young Futures program, underscores its commitment to preventing violence at its roots through early intervention and community engagement.
As a grieving mother advocating against knife crime, I commend the government for enacting robust legislation in honor of my son. The transformative impact of Ronan’s Law illustrates the potential for tangible change when government and communities unite against a common threat.
I implore the government to maintain its momentum in combating knife crime and continue collaborating with stakeholders to drive further progress. The legacy of Ronan’s Law serves as a beacon of hope in our mission to safeguard future generations from senseless violence.
