“Rent Dispute Turns Fatal: Brother Stabbed to Death”

A man with a reported aversion to paying rent has been arrested for allegedly murdering his brother in a violent stabbing incident during a dispute over rent collection.

Thomas Campbell, aged 59, was taken into custody and charged with murder after his brother, Erik Campbell, 53, was fatally stabbed at Thomas’s residence in Gary, Indiana. The altercation arose when Erik arrived to collect rent on behalf of their mother, leading to a heated argument between the siblings.

The disagreement escalated into a physical altercation where Thomas wielded a knife, inflicting multiple stab wounds on Erik across his body. Police reports, as per local media, revealed that surveillance footage captured the brothers fighting over the payment.

Erik was seen on video confronting Thomas about the contents of his hoodie pocket and challenging him before trying to disarm him. The footage then showed Thomas pulling out a knife and repeatedly stabbing his brother in the arm, neck, chest, and stomach.

Erik succumbed to his injuries while being transported to Methodist Hospital Northlake. Thomas, the alleged attacker, was the one who called 911 for his brother, claiming self-defense as Erik allegedly threatened him with a gun.

On the scene, Thomas was found on the front porch covered in blood, with Erik lying unresponsive beside him. No firearm was recovered, but witnesses recalled Thomas stabbing his brother in the front yard and then finding a blood-stained knife nearby.

Thomas stated to the police that the altercation turned physical with closed fists and claimed he resorted to the knife when he thought Erik was reaching for a weapon. He alleged to have blacked out and continued stabbing his brother, citing constant bullying as a motive.

Detectives revealed that the tension between the brothers had been escalating for two decades, with their mother confirming Thomas’s reluctance to pay rent. Thomas is now facing murder charges and is detained at Lake County Jail without bond, with a court appearance scheduled for January 12. If convicted, he could receive a maximum sentence of 65 years in prison.
