Tekashi 6ix9ine, the popular rapper, recently shared his experience of being incarcerated alongside the former Venezuelan leader Nicolas Maduro. Born Daniel Hernandez, the 29-year-old artist voluntarily checked into the Metropolitan Detention Center (MDC) in Brooklyn, New York, this Tuesday.
Hernandez’s admission to the MDC follows his involvement in a gang-related case where he confessed to assaulting an individual and possessing illegal substances the previous year. Consequently, he received a three-month federal custody sentence, which was an extension of a prior 45-day sentence imposed in 2024 due to breaching the conditions of his supervised release.
In an Instagram post, Hernandez mentioned his plans to engage in basketball games with fellow inmates during his time at the MDC, highlighting his enthusiasm for the activity. He also reminisced about sharing a cell with notable figures like Sean “Diddy” Combs and the former Honduran President Juan Orlando Hernandez.
This marks Hernandez’s second probation violation resulting in a prison sentence within a year. His incarceration coincides with the recent US attempt to capture Maduro and his spouse, Cilia Flores. Notably, the MDC has housed various high-profile individuals, including Sam Bankman-Fried, Ghislaine Maxwell, and the infamous Mexican drug lord known as “El Chapo.”
Situated in Brooklyn’s Sunset Park neighborhood, the MDC primarily detains individuals with pending cases in the US district court for New York’s eastern district. The facility also temporarily accommodates those serving short sentences. Recent reports indicate an improvement in the prison’s conditions, with decreased violence, stricter inmate schedules, and enhanced safety measures for both residents and staff members.
Despite these advancements, the MDC has been previously labeled as a harrowing environment, with incidents of violence resulting in fatalities and injuries. Overcrowding has been a persistent issue, with inmate populations exceeding the intended capacity, leading to concerns about substandard living conditions.
