As the Education Secretary, I have always emphasized the significance of my role in government, highlighting the opportunity to positively impact young lives and provide them with the promising futures they deserve. I firmly believe that one’s background should not dictate their destiny. Every child, regardless of their postcode or parental income, should have equal access to opportunities in education across the country.
Unfortunately, many schools today are facing infrastructure challenges, with deteriorating facilities sending the message to students that they are undervalued. This situation, attributed to past government policies, needs to be rectified. Labour aims to address this issue by ensuring that by the end of this Parliament, every school and college in England not undergoing substantial rebuilding will be free from hazardous conditions known as RAAC. Projects for school rebuilds will also be advancing to various stages of completion.
The ultimate goal is to create a safe and conducive learning environment for every child, where they feel valued and important. Labour has already taken strides in this direction by eliminating RAAC from 62 schools, benefiting over 42,000 children, and initiating rebuilding projects in more than half of the schools needing extensive work.
Improving school infrastructure is not just about physical structures; it directly impacts children’s educational outcomes. Research indicates that students in substandard buildings tend to have lower academic achievement. Moreover, the condition of school facilities influences students’ perception of their worth and the priority placed on their education. It is crucial, especially for disadvantaged and marginalized children, to feel welcomed and supported in the educational system.
The significant capital investment of £38 billion in education, the highest in a decade, underscores the government’s commitment to children’s education and future prospects. The recently introduced 10-Year Infrastructure Strategy provides schools with long-term funding certainty, with maintenance funding set to increase annually. Additionally, plans are in place to rebuild 250 additional schools, ensuring they are sustainable, resilient to climate change, and provide ample access to nature.
Quality education cannot be delivered in subpar facilities. Children deserve schools that inspire and nurture their potential, fostering a sense of pride and belonging in the community. By investing in modern, safe, and environmentally friendly school buildings, the government is demonstrating its dedication to providing children with the resources they need to thrive and succeed.
