Google has announced that it will cease supporting its Chrome browser on older versions of Apple’s macOS platform, affecting users of MacBooks and iMacs. While Chrome will still function on these devices, users will no longer receive updates or security patches, potentially leaving them vulnerable to cyber threats.
The change will take effect from July of this year, with Google ending support for Macs running macOS 12 (Monterey) or earlier. Users on these systems will need to upgrade to a newer operating system like macOS Ventura to continue using Chrome securely.
Unfortunately, some Macs, such as iMacs predating the 2017 model and MacBook Airs purchased before 2018, are not compatible with Ventura. This means that affected users may have to consider purchasing a new device to ensure continued safe usage of Chrome.
According to Google’s blog post, Chrome version 150 is the final release supporting macOS 12 (Monterey), while Chrome version 151, set for release on July 28, 2026, will require macOS 13 Ventura or later. Users are advised to ensure their devices are running macOS 13 or newer to receive future Chrome updates.
While older Chrome versions will remain functional, no further updates will be provided for users on macOS 12. Google recommends transitioning to a supported macOS version, such as macOS 13 Ventura or later, to receive the latest security enhancements and Chrome features.
Users are urged to review their settings promptly to ensure a smooth transition in light of these upcoming changes.
