Millions of Gmail users will soon have the option to change their email address to a new one. Google had previously hinted at this update, and it is now being rolled out globally. In an update on the Gmail blog page, Google confirmed that users can switch their Google Account email from one ending in gmail.com to a new address with the same ending.
This update may be well-received, especially for individuals who wish to change their username or have had changes in their circumstances. However, Google has emphasized that this feature is gradually being made available to all users and may not be accessible to everyone immediately.
The new system allows both the old and new email addresses to work simultaneously, ensuring that emails sent to the current Gmail address are automatically forwarded to the new one. Google assures users that all their account data, including photos, messages, and emails linked to the original address, will remain unaffected.
To determine if you can switch to a new Gmail address without losing any emails, follow these steps:
– Visit myaccount.google.com/google-account-email on your computer and sign in if required.
– Click on Personal info in the top-left corner.
– Select Email, then Google Account email.
– Click on Change Google Account email under “Google Account email.”
– If the option is not available, it may not be accessible to you yet.
– Enter the new username you desire, ensuring it has not been used before.
– Click Change email, then confirm by selecting Yes, change email.
– Follow the on-screen instructions to complete the process.
After the process is finished, your new Gmail address will become your primary account email, while the old address will serve as an alternate email.
