“Fatal Train Derailment in Mexico: 13 Dead, 98 Injured”

At least 13 individuals have lost their lives, and 98 others sustained injuries following a train derailment in Mexico on Sunday, as stated by the Mexican Navy.

The incident occurred on Sunday, December 28, in Asunción Ixtaltepec, Oaxaca, along the primary railway route between Veracruz and Salina Cruz, with approximately 250 passengers on board.

In an official statement issued at 6 pm local time, Mexico’s navy confirmed the unfortunate loss of 13 lives, with 98 individuals injured, 36 of whom are currently hospitalized.

Mexico’s Navy (SEMAR) reported on Twitter that a train had veered off the track on the Z railway line passing through the Isthmus of Teuantepec. They are collaborating with local authorities to assist passengers and address the aftermath of the accident.

President of Mexico, Claudia Sheinbaum, also commented on the situation, confirming the casualties and injuries. She mentioned that the injured are receiving treatment in hospitals in Matƭas Romero, Salina Cruz, JuchitƔn, and Ixtepec, with officials instructed to provide support to the affected families.

The Interoceanic Train, connecting Mexico’s Pacific and Gulf coasts, is under the management of Mexico’s Navy. An official investigation will be launched to determine the cause of the derailment, as announced by Mexico’s Attorney General, Ernestina Godoy.

The incident has sparked concerns, and authorities are actively working to provide updates on the situation and coordinate efforts to address the aftermath.
