In a heartbreaking turn of events, an eight-year-old girl was left orphaned after discovering the lifeless bodies of her entire family in the cellar of their home. The tragedy unfolded when the family members, including the father, mother, brother, and grandmother, succumbed to toxic gas in quick succession while exploring the basement.

The sequence of events started with the father, a respected law professor named Mikhail Chelyshev, entering the cellar. Concerned when he did not return, his wife Anastasia went in search of him, only to meet the same fate. Their son Georgy then ventured into the cellar, unaware of the danger, and tragically perished as well. Sensing trouble, Anastasia’s mother Iraida sought help from a neighbor but ultimately met the same tragic end as the rest of the family.

The devastating incident, which occurred in Laishevo near Kazan in the Russian republic of Tatarstan in 2014, was attributed to lethal gas produced by decaying potatoes stored in the cellar. The young girl, Maria Chelyshev, survived because she had not entered the area where the toxic fumes had accumulated.

Experts highlighted the presence of glycoalkaloids like solanine and chaconine in potatoes, toxic compounds that can adversely affect the nervous system, causing symptoms such as weakness and confusion. While such poisonings are rare, experts emphasize the importance of storing potatoes correctly throughout the year, recommending a cool, dark storage place and cautioning against consuming potatoes that show signs of decay or sprouting.

To prevent such tragedies, it is essential to discard green or spoiled potatoes, inspect them for any signs of mold or decay before consumption, and ensure proper ventilation and cleaning of storage areas. The heartbreaking story underscores the critical need for food safety awareness and proper storage practices to prevent similar incidents.

Experts also advise against eating potatoes that have turned green or begun sprouting, emphasizing the importance of proper potato storage to avoid exposure to toxic compounds. By following these precautions, individuals can reduce the risk of accidental poisoning and safeguard their health.
