“Electoral Commission Clears Farage of Campaign Spending Probe”

The Electoral Commission has confirmed that Nigel Farage’s campaign spending in the general election will not undergo an investigation despite calls from the Labour party. Allegations were made regarding potential overspending by the Reform UK leader in his Clacton constituency during the 2024 General Election. The accusations included the failure to disclose expenses for various campaign materials and office refurbishments, exceeding the constituency’s spending limit.

Although Essex Police initially considered investigating the reported expenditure discrepancies, they later determined the one-year time limit for such investigations had passed. The Electoral Commission concluded that there was no credible evidence of electoral law violations by Reform UK, closing the inquiry without further actions.

In response to the allegations, Reform UK denied any wrongdoing, labeling the claims as politically driven. Peter Harris, Mr. Farage’s election agent in Clacton, dismissed the complaints as baseless and politically motivated. The party also criticized Richard Everett, a former member of their campaign team, as a disgruntled ex-councillor expelled from the party months ago for spreading misinformation.

The Electoral Commission’s statement addressed concerns raised by Labour regarding Reform UK’s 2024 election expenditures but found no grounds for additional scrutiny. The investigation concluded that no expenses related to Mr. Farage’s campaign in Clacton were omitted from Reform UK’s national expenditure reports.
