Davis Cup Player Dan Evans Considers Quitting Team

Dan Evans, a prominent Davis Cup player, expressed his frustration in 2022 by considering quitting the Great Britain team due to feeling slighted by not being picked for the doubles event. Despite his successful history with the team in the 2015 Davis Cup, Evans was disheartened by the decision and believed his skills were overlooked. He emphasized that his lack of regular doubles play on the tour should not be a determining factor in his selection for the Davis Cup.

In an interview with the i newspaper, Evans stated that he felt disappointed and somewhat insulted by never being chosen to play doubles in the Davis Cup. He argued that his performance in doubles matches, when given the opportunity, was satisfactory and that the selection process should focus more on game style compatibility rather than just doubles rankings.

Evans’ discontent peaked during the 2021 Davis Cup Finals in Austria when he was excluded from the doubles matches. Despite his efforts to be considered for the doubles, the team management opted for other players. This led Evans to contemplate his future involvement with the team, indicating that a change in approach might be necessary.

The following year, Evans and his partner, Neal Skupski, secured a crucial victory in the doubles match against Colombia, contributing to Great Britain’s overall success in the Davis Cup. However, Evans later faced a setback as he had to miss the 2023 finals due to an injury.

In 2025, Britain faced elimination from the Davis Cup Finals after a defeat to Japan in the qualifying round. Italy, led by Matteo Berrettini and Flavio Cobolli, advanced to the semi-finals by overcoming Austria. Berrettini’s win in the singles and Cobolli’s victory in the doubles propelled Italy to a decisive victory, setting up a semi-final clash with Belgium.
