“Community Mourns Loss of Local Business Owner Swept Out to Sea on Christmas Day”

The family of a man presumed dead after being swept out to sea while swimming on Christmas Day has paid a touching tribute. Matthew Upham, 63, was identified as one of the missing men in Budleigh Salterton, Devon. Known for running a local antiques business, Matthew Upham Antiques, his family confirmed his disappearance in a statement shared on the business’ Instagram account on Boxing Day.

Expressing deep sorrow, the family stated, “Our hearts are broken by the loss of our dear family member Matthew Upham, who went missing on Christmas morning. Matthew is dearly loved and will be greatly missed. We extend our heartfelt gratitude to the emergency services, especially the RNLI and coastguard, for their unwavering dedication and efforts during this challenging time.”

Emergency services responded to reports of individuals in the water at Budleigh Salterton on Christmas Day, with a large crowd gathered for the traditional Christmas Day swims. While several people were rescued, two men, one in his 40s and the other in his 60s, remained unaccounted for. Despite extensive search efforts involving various rescue teams and lifeboats, the men were still missing as darkness fell on Thursday.

Described by friends as exceptionally kind and cheerful, Mr. Upham was a well-liked figure in the community known for his daily swims and familiarity with the local waters. Friends expressed hope for his safety, emphasizing the importance of finding him unharmed as the ultimate Christmas wish.
