Just a single Premier League match on Boxing Day has been criticized by the Co-Operative party for betraying fans and disregarding a long-standing tradition that unites families.
The General Secretary of the Co-operative Party, Joe Fortune, expressed concern over the decision, stating that it neglects those who contribute to the beauty of the game. He urged the Independent Football Regulator (IFR) to intervene to prevent such occurrences in the future.
In a letter to the chair of the IFR, David Kogan, Mr. Fortune called for measures to address scheduling issues, recommended increased support for grassroots football by the Premier League, and advocated for reforms in ownership structures.
He emphasized that the shift away from tradition and fan values is attributed to the pressure from expanded European club competitions conflicting with the Premier League’s broadcasting commitments. This move reflects the prioritization of profit over fan experience in football’s commercialization.
Mr. Fortune highlighted the growing trend of fans being priced out of enjoying football, coupled with top teams in the country being predominantly owned by foreign entities. He stressed that sports, including football, should revolve around the fans who contribute their time and resources to the community experience.
Boxing Day football has long been a cherished tradition in English football, with matches on December 26 being a significant part of the football calendar. This year will witness the fewest top-flight games on Boxing Day since World War II, with only eight matches played in 2024.
Labour MP Anneliese Midgley supported Mr. Fortune’s sentiments, emphasizing the importance of Boxing Day football as a generational family tradition. She called for fans to be given greater consideration in decision-making processes to ensure their voices are heard and traditions are respected.
In response, an IFR spokesperson reiterated the organization’s commitment to prioritizing fans in their future licensing regulations. Clubs will be required to engage meaningfully with fans on critical decisions, and measures will be taken to ensure compliance with fan engagement standards.
