A man unexpectedly showed up at a couple’s home just two days before Christmas, holding a bin bag and a frozen chicken. Rob and Dianne Parsons were taken aback when they heard a knock on their door as they were preparing for the holiday festivities. The man, identified as Ronnie Lockwood, turned out to be someone Rob knew from his childhood Sunday School days.
Rob’s simple invitation to Ronnie, who was autistic, led to a significant turning point in the latter’s life over the next forty years. The couple, in their mid-twenties at the time, shared why they decided to welcome Ronnie into their home on December 23, 1975. Despite planning for a brief stay over Christmas, Ronnie ended up living with them for 45 years until his passing.
The Parsons, who were relatively new in their marriage, couldn’t bear to let Ronnie leave as they discovered his challenging past of homelessness and unemployment since he was 15. Despite initial awkwardness and struggles with social interactions, Ronnie eventually became part of the family, receiving support and care from Rob and Dianne.
With their help, Ronnie secured a job as a waste collector, and Rob even ensured Ronnie had appropriate clothing for work. Rob’s dedication was evident as he woke up early every day to drive Ronnie to work before attending to his own legal profession. A heartwarming moment was when Ronnie humorously referred to Rob as his solicitor to his colleagues.
Although the dynamics at home were at times challenging, the couple expressed their deep bond with Ronnie, stating they couldn’t imagine life without him. Ronnie, who passed away in 2020 at the age of 75 after suffering a stroke, left a lasting impact on Rob, Dianne, and their shared journey together.
