BT has announced a significant update regarding landline services, urging households utilizing this technology to pay attention. The traditional copper cables, in use for over a century, are set to be phased out within a year, with the official shutdown date scheduled for January 31, 2027.
This transition requires millions of users to shift to new digital services that rely on internet connectivity for making calls. BT emphasizes the necessity of this change, citing the outdated copper system’s overload, unreliability, and inability to meet modern connectivity standards.
The introduction of Digital Voice by BT aims to offer a more dependable connection, enhanced audio quality, call forwarding to mobile devices, and improved call screening to combat scams and unwanted marketing calls. While over three million UK households have already made the switch to Digital Voice, many more are yet to do so.
BT has issued a reminder to customers, stressing the importance of acting promptly to avoid disruptions to phone and broadband services as the deadline approaches. Users are encouraged to ensure their landline and home phone are prepared for the transition, as copper wires are gradually becoming obsolete.
The process of switching to digital landlines is straightforward for most BT handsets, often allowing users to retain their existing phone number and billing structure without any price increase. In cases where a simple plug-in to the broadband hub is insufficient, contacting the provider or arranging an engineer visit may be necessary.
Customers with special requirements, such as those using telecare devices or pendant alarms, are advised to inform their provider promptly to receive appropriate support. It is essential for individuals unsure of their switch status to verify and prepare their homes for the retirement of the copper network.
Allison Kirkby, BT Group Chief Executive, stresses the significance of upgrading the UK’s digital infrastructure to ensure reliable and modern connectivity for all. BT’s substantial investment in infrastructure aims to enhance connectivity, drive growth, and foster digital inclusion in homes, businesses, and communities.
