An investigation has revealed new details about the tragic final hours of a British woman who traveled to the United States with the apparent intention of meeting a man she connected with on a fetish website.
Sonia Exelby, a 32-year-old woman from Portsmouth, Hampshire, was discovered deceased in a wooded area in Marion Oaks, Florida, after missing her return flight to the UK on October 13. Law enforcement officials stated that Sonia left digital evidence suggesting she had suicidal thoughts and had traveled to the US for potential sexual exploitation, torture, and even murder.
Following the recovery of Sonia’s body from a shallow grave, Dwain Hall was arrested by Florida authorities on charges of first-degree murder and kidnapping. An autopsy report, disclosed to The Mirror, disclosed the grim circumstances leading up to Sonia’s demise.
According to the Marion County Medical Examiner’s findings, Sonia sustained four stab wounds and suffered injuries to various organs including her aorta, esophagus, stomach, spleen, pancreas, and left kidney. The autopsy report, finalized on November 4, confirmed that Sonia’s death was caused by stab wounds to her torso, with her demise officially classified as a homicide.
The examination detailed that Sonia had endured stab wounds ranging from four to seven inches deep and had a distinctive “dried, red-orange, “V”-shaped abrasion.”
Furthermore, a toxicology investigation indicated the likely presence of cannabinoids in Sonia’s system, substances commonly found in cannabis plants. Blood analysis also revealed a blood alcohol concentration of 0.064.
Medical experts at the Cleveland Clinic explained that a blood alcohol concentration between 0.05% and 0.08% could result in reduced inhibition, decreased alertness, and impaired decision-making. The documents containing this information were shared with The Mirror during the Discovery process in anticipation of the trial.
Sonia’s family disclosed that she had been grappling with mental health challenges and had flown to the US on October 10. Hall was apprehended by law enforcement after making unauthorized attempts to use Sonia’s credit cards. Initially denying any acquaintance with Sonia, Hall later confessed to picking her up and driving her to an Airbnb accommodation.
Records from license plate readers indicated Hall’s vehicle was present at Gainsville airport around the time of Sonia’s arrival. During police interrogation, Hall reportedly acknowledged discussing bondage, suicide, and Sonia’s expressed desire to be killed.
Attorney Julia Williamson, representing Hall, informed The Mirror that he is scheduled to appear in court in February. Williamson stated that a written plea of not guilty had been submitted and would remain until the Discovery process revealed the government’s evidence against Hall.
She added that at present, Hall would maintain his right to remain silent regarding the accusations. Williamson extended her condolences to those impacted by the tragic loss, expressing hope for potential future statements to Sonia Exelby’s friends and family.
