“Braintree Couple Slashes Heating Costs to £40/Month with Innovative Energy Scheme”

A couple in Braintree, Essex, has successfully reduced their monthly heating costs to just £40 by participating in a new energy scheme trial. Terrence, 76, and Lesley Bridges, 75, opted to replace their gas boiler with a unique system consisting of over 500 computer banks housed in their shed. This innovative setup generates heat that is then channeled into their hot water system.

Previously, the Bridges were spending £375 each month to heat their two-bedroom bungalow. However, since installing the data center in December 2024, they have seen a significant decrease in their bills, now ranging between £40 and £70 per month. Mr. Bridges, a retired RAF sergeant, expressed relief at being able to afford to keep the heating on without worrying about costs, particularly crucial for his wife, Lesley, who suffers from spinal stenosis.

The HeatHub data center, developed by Thermify as part of UK Power Networks’ SHIELD project, aims to help low-income households transition to net zero emissions. Mr. Bridges commended the scheme, noting the added bonus of solar panels on their roof. The couple decided to place the system in their shed to avoid disrupting their living space or garden.

CEO Travis Theune of Thermify highlighted the company’s mission to combat fuel poverty by offering clean and affordable energy solutions. Daniel Greenwood, from Eastlight Community Homes, expressed pride in implementing the first heat hub installation in the UK through the SHIELD project, emphasizing the positive impact on residents’ comfort and finances.

The successful trial at the Bridges’ home showcased significant carbon reductions and reduced heating costs, paving the way for future installations in up to 50 more homes. UK Power Networks aims to expand this initiative to benefit 100,000 units annually by 2030, ensuring that vulnerable households can access sustainable technologies for a greener future.
