EE mobile users are being cautioned about a resurgence of a scam text message. Cybersecurity experts at Bitdefender have reported that some EE customers are receiving urgent messages threatening the loss of thousands of EE reward points unless immediate action is taken.
According to Bitdefender, scammers are pretending to be associated with EE to entice individuals into clicking on malicious links that redirect them to fraudulent websites. These fake websites are crafted to steal login credentials, allowing the scammers to profit from the stolen information.
The success of this scam lies in its sense of urgency, as fraudsters rely on users acting impulsively without careful consideration.
Bitdefender explained that scammers use a tactic of creating a tight deadline to induce a feeling of impending loss. Users are directed to click on a link that appears to be from EE but instead leads to a fake site.
Genuine alerts from EE will only be found within official EE accounts and not through unsolicited texts. Users are advised to treat any message that pressures them with a countdown or urgent action as suspicious. If in doubt, texts should be forwarded to 7726 and then deleted.
This type of scam has targeted EE customers in the past, with reports of similar fake messages earlier this year. Users have recounted experiences of falling for these scams by clicking on seemingly legitimate links that turned out to be fraudulent.
EE has reiterated that it does not operate a points program and has shared examples of scam messages circulating, such as those urging users to click on links to redeem prizes.
EE’s latest advice includes avoiding clicking on unknown links in text messages, not responding to suspicious messages, refraining from calling the numbers provided in such messages, and never disclosing personal or financial information.
EE users are advised to remain cautious and vigilant.
