“Aldi Named UK’s Most Affordable Supermarket for Fifth Consecutive Year”

Aldi has been recognized as the most affordable supermarket in 2025 by consumer watchdog group Which?. Which? regularly monitors grocery prices and identifies the most budget-friendly stores each month. Throughout 2025, Aldi claimed the title of the cheapest supermarket for ten out of 12 months, solidifying its position as the UK’s most economical supermarket for the fifth consecutive year.

In December, Aldi emerged as the most cost-effective choice for a selection of 68 items, with an average monthly cost of £123.60. Lidl followed closely in second place, with an average cost of £123.70 for both Lidl Plus members and non-members, trailing Aldi by just 10p. Lidl held the top spot as the cheapest supermarket twice in 2025, specifically in July and October, with a mere 77p difference in average monthly prices compared to Aldi.

For the same set of 68 items, Asda had an average cost of £134.89 in December, while Tesco Clubcard members paid £135.84, or £139.12 without a Clubcard. Sainsbury’s Nectar cardholders spent £141.45, or £143.74 without a Nectar card, while Waitrose topped the list as the most expensive supermarket, with a total of £170.46 for the 68-item list in December.

Which? research indicated that Waitrose was on average 35% more expensive than Aldi in 2025. Additionally, Which? compared the costs of a larger weekly shopping list consisting of 180 items, excluding Aldi and Lidl due to their smaller product range. Asda emerged as the most economical choice for the larger list in December, totaling an average bill of £450.82.

Tesco Clubcard holders spent an average of £462 in December for the 180-item list, while non-Clubcard holders paid £493.53. Morrisons shoppers had a bill of £466.04 with a loyalty discount or £467.46 without, whereas Sainsbury’s Nectar cardholders paid £468.61, and non-members paid £501.89. Waitrose maintained its status as the most expensive supermarket for the larger shopping list, with an average bill of £529.17.

Reena Sewraz, Which? Retail Editor, commented on Aldi’s consistent performance, highlighting its affordability over the years. Sewraz also praised Asda for offering a wide range of branded goods at competitive prices. She emphasized the importance of comparative shopping to save significant amounts over time on food expenses.
