Four people have died and another was injured after a cable car plunged to the ground when a wire snapped in Italy.

The vehicle, which connected the Italian town of Castellamare di Stabia, near Naples, with the summit of Mount Faito, fell to the ground at around 3pm this afternoon, prompting a large search and rescue mission. Three other cable cars, containing 16 people, were trapped in the air as a result of the incident. High winds and fog have hampered efforts to reach those injured in the accident, which is feared to have been caused by a cable suddenly breaking.
