Quebec’s independent police oversight agency is currently investigating a fatal incident that transpired during a police pursuit involving three distinct law enforcement entities near Lévis during the night.
Reports indicate that authorities were summoned to the location approximately at 11:30 p.m. on Friday following multiple 911 calls reporting a collision and gunshots on the Pierre-Laporte Bridge in Quebec City.
The Bureau des enquêtes indépendantes (BEI) disclosed that a person sustained serious injuries as a result of the collision, and a suspect absconded from the scene in a stolen vehicle.
Allegedly, the suspect’s vehicle collided head-on with another vehicle heading south on the bridge. Subsequently, gunshots were fired, resulting in one individual being struck twice.
Subsequent to the incident, provincial police initiated a pursuit just prior to 1:30 a.m. The stolen vehicle was eventually intercepted at Lallemand Road and Guillaume-Couture Boulevard in Lévis, as confirmed by local law enforcement.
A joint effort involving officers from the Sûreté du Québec, Quebec City police service, and Lévis police successfully surrounded the suspect’s vehicle. A tactical unit from provincial police discovered the individual unresponsive inside the vehicle, and the individual was pronounced deceased at the scene.
The injured person from the shooting incident is reported to be in stable condition, according to the police watchdog. Seven BEI investigators have been deployed to scrutinize the circumstances surrounding the operation, with additional assistance from Montreal police.
Meanwhile, Montreal police have initiated a separate inquiry into the events leading up to the police intervention. The BEI is actively seeking witnesses to provide their accounts and encourages them to reach out through the agency’s official website.
