“Plight of Unaccompanied Minors in Ceuta Exposed”

Seventeen-year-old Ikram messaged CBC on Monday, expressing her return to the streets. After enduring nearly a month of homelessness in various places, she found temporary refuge with a family in Ceuta. However, her stay was short-lived as the work opportunities dwindled.

Ikram left Fnideq in July along with thousands of Moroccans and migrants aiming to enter Ceuta for a chance at legal residency in Europe. Dissatisfied with life in Morocco, Ikram shared her family’s financial struggles, with her father earning meager wages as a tailor.

While most migrants from the July surge quickly returned to Morocco, Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez reported that around 5,000 individuals remained in Ceuta. Among them were hundreds of unaccompanied minors, including Ikram, facing precarious living conditions.

Save the Children Spain’s migration specialist, Jennifer Zuppiroli, disclosed that the Spanish Ministry of the Interior registered 2,500 minors in Ceuta. However, the actual number is believed to be higher, with many awaiting identification and assistance. Spain’s Minister for Youth and Children, Sira Rego, highlighted the presence of numerous minors under 13, including around 700 girls.

The minors in Ceuta predominantly hail from Morocco, with some from sub-Saharan Africa. Family reunification is prioritized, but in cases where return is not feasible, international law mandates special protections for unaccompanied minors.

Ikram’s journey to Ceuta was unplanned, spurred by witnessing others crossing the border. Despite the perilous attempt and harrowing experiences, she remains determined to build a better future abroad to support her family.

Ceuta’s streets are rife with unaccompanied minors like Ikram, enduring challenging circumstances. Tensions have escalated in the enclave, with reports of violence against migrants and unrest among residents.

Abdo, a 17-year-old migrant, shared his struggles and aspirations after multiple failed attempts to reach Europe. His poignant story underscores the hardships faced by many seeking a better life.

As the situation in Ceuta remains dire, efforts are being made to provide temporary shelter for vulnerable migrants like Abdo and Ikram. The challenges faced by these individuals reflect the complex humanitarian crisis unfolding in the Spanish enclave.
