Chief Kele Antoine Urges Community Support After Fort Simpson Shooting

Chief Kele Antoine of Łı́ı́dlı̨ı̨ Kų́ę́ First Nation expressed the profound impact of a recent shooting in Fort Simpson, N.W.T., which resulted in one person being injured. Antoine emphasized the tight-knit nature of the community, highlighting that the well-being of one family resonates throughout. Urging community members with any relevant information to step forward, Antoine stressed the collaborative effort needed beyond law enforcement.

The Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) responded to the incident after receiving reports of a man shot in a home’s backyard around 1:40 a.m. The injured individual was promptly attended to at the local health center before being transferred to Yellowknife for further medical care. RCMP indicated that the shooting seemed targeted and disclosed an ongoing investigation involving assistance from Yellowknife RCMP and allied agencies.

Despite the situation, authorities assured the public that there is no immediate danger. While Antoine speculated the incident’s connection to drugs, RCMP has not verified this claim. Additionally, Antoine emphasized the necessity for continual and adequate funding and resources for local RCMP to combat violence effectively, stressing the importance of a sustained approach to curbing drug-related issues and preventing further violence within the community.
