Man in Custody for Arson at MP’s Residence

A man has been taken into custody following a series of car fires at the residence of a Member of Parliament in Scarborough, as per Toronto authorities. Roshvin Crofton, aged 24, was apprehended on Sunday and is facing multiple charges, including arson causing property damage, mischief exceeding $5,000, conspiracy to commit a serious offense, possession of flammable materials, and non-compliance with a probation order, as outlined in a police report released on Friday.

A 2025 Hyundai Sonata, suspected to be linked to the incident, was impounded. Authorities are seeking details about the whereabouts of the vehicle in the days leading up to the alleged arson. Additionally, a second suspect is being pursued by the police.

The purported arson took place in the driveway of Liberal MP Salma Zahid’s home. Zahid represents the federal constituency of Scarborough Centre-Don Valley East.

According to law enforcement, an unidentified individual approached the vehicles in the driveway on the early morning of August 27, poured an accelerant on two cars, set them ablaze, and then fled the scene. Subsequently, a third vehicle sustained damage from the ensuing fire.

Zahid expressed gratitude to the Toronto police following the arrest announcement, stating, “I appreciate the arrest and charges related to the arson incident outside my residence on August 27th, and the ongoing search for another suspect in connection with this case.” She further mentioned, “As the investigation progresses, the motive behind this incident remains unknown. I will reserve further comments until all the facts are revealed.”

Zahid, a Liberal member without a prominent role, has served as an MP for Scarborough Centre since 2015. She presently heads the standing committee on science and research and serves as the vice-chair of the Canada-China legislative association.

Numerous politicians, including Prime Minister Mark Carney, condemned the incident, with Carney denouncing it as a “cowardly act of violence and intimidation.”
