“2026 Nobel Prize Winners Revolutionize Neuroscience”

Karl Deisseroth, Peter Hegemann, and Georg Nagel were awarded the 2026 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine for their groundbreaking work on light-gated ion channels and optogenetics, announced by the Nobel Assembly in Stockholm. Optogenetics enables the precise control of individual nerve cell activity in the brain, a method now widely utilized in research laboratories worldwide to unravel the complexities of the brain.

The trio, comprising American Deisseroth, German Hegemann, and German Nagel, expressed their delight at sharing the prestigious prize, emphasizing the honor of receiving it alongside their esteemed colleagues. The Nobel Prizes carry a monetary award of 12 million Swedish crowns, which the three scientists will divide among themselves. Deisseroth is affiliated with Stanford University, Hegemann with Humboldt University in Berlin, and Nagel with the University of Würzburg in Germany.

Researchers are applying optogenetics in clinical trials to restore vision in individuals with retinitis pigmentosa, a condition causing blindness, by inserting light-sensitive proteins into the retina. Additionally, there are hopes that optogenetics could enhance cochlear implants, offering more precise stimulation of the auditory nerve compared to current electrical devices.

The groundbreaking journey in neuroscience began with Hegemann’s investigations in the early 1990s on light reactions in the alga Chlamydomonas, leading to the discovery of channelrhodopsin-2, an ion channel responsive to light. Deisseroth later demonstrated the application of this protein in generating electrical impulses in nerve cells, pioneering the technique known as optogenetics.

The Nobel Prizes, established by Alfred Nobel, celebrate individuals who have made significant contributions for the betterment of humanity. The laureates will be honored on December 10, the anniversary of Nobel’s passing.
