Federal Court Orders Disclosure of 1986 Study on Nazi War Criminals

The Federal Court has mandated the disclosure of previously hidden sections of a significant 1986 study commissioned by a federal inquiry into war crimes. Federal Court Justice Simon Fothergill, in a recent public ruling, directed the government to reveal redacted parts of the study regarding the integration of suspected Nazi war criminals into Canada post-World War II.

B’nai Brith Canada has persistently advocated for greater transparency surrounding researcher Alti Rodal’s report. In response to B’nai Brith’s information request, Library and Archives Canada divulged additional sections of the report in February 2024. However, certain segments, including those detailing the involvement of American intelligence agencies in aiding Nazi collaborators’ settlement in Canada, were still withheld.

Despite federal claims that releasing more details could negatively impact Canada’s international relations, Justice Fothergill refuted this argument in his verdict.
