Quebec officials are expressing strong disapproval following the tragic passing of a four-year-old boy in the Nunavik village of Ivujivik amid reports that medical care was denied to the child.
Québec Solidaire representative Sol Zanetti issued a statement demanding clarity regarding the demise of Jusi Padlayat. Zanetti revealed that the child passed away on August 3 after being taken to the local clinic by his parents multiple times for stomach discomfort but allegedly not receiving treatment.
According to an interview with La Presse, Padlayat’s grandmother, Annie Mangiuk, claimed that the family’s concerns were dismissed by medical personnel who suggested administering Advil or Tylenol to the boy. Mangiuk recounted that Padlayat was discovered unconscious on August 1, taken to the local nursing station, and subsequently transferred to the Montreal Children’s Hospital where he succumbed two days later.
Zanetti condemned the prolonged suffering of a child as unacceptable and raised concerns of potential neglect, urging a thorough investigation, especially if systemic racism is suspected within the health services.
The Quebec Liberal Party (QLP) also voiced the need for enhanced healthcare services in remote communities like Ivujivik, proposing increased telemedicine options as a viable solution. Sandrine Rioux, the QLP candidate in Ungava, emphasized the importance of ensuring equitable healthcare access for residents in the region.
The tragic incident prompted the Joyce’s Principle Office to emphasize the necessity of respect and attentive care across all services offered to Indigenous communities, drawing parallels to the case of Joyce Echaquan, an Atikamekw woman who faced racism at a Quebec hospital before her death.
Both the Inuulitsivik Health Centre and the Nunavik Regional Board of Health and Social Services have pledged to conduct internal and external reviews following the incident. The Quebec coroners office confirmed an ongoing investigation into the matter without disclosing specific details, while the Montreal Children’s Hospital declined to comment on individual cases.
