Marie Burge dedicated her life to advocating for the people of Prince Edward Island. Her unwavering commitment to social justice, workers’ rights, and environmental conservation made a significant impact on the community. Burge passed away at the age of 88 in Charlottetown while under palliative care.
In 1984, she played a pivotal role in establishing the Cooper Institute, a non-profit organization that focused on research, education, and community development. A close friend and colleague, Joe Byrne, highlighted Burge’s unique ability to inspire others to think differently and take on new challenges.
Before her involvement with the Cooper Institute, Burge was actively engaged in various community initiatives. She joined the Sisters of St. Martha in 1958 and taught at Kinkora High School. Additionally, she spent five years in the Dominican Republic as part of the Latin American Mission Program, where she and her friend Sister Teresa Currie bravely protected a young man from execution by hiding him in their home during a period of political unrest.
Mary Murphy, another member of the Sisters of St. Martha, noted that Burge returned from her mission work with a renewed passion for advocating for marginalized groups. Known for her fearlessness and ability to unite people for a common cause, Burge was a driving force in championing issues such as fair wages and environmental conservation.
One of Burge’s significant endeavors was her advocacy for a basic income guarantee for P.E.I. She believed in creating a system that benefits everyone, not just a select few. Her tireless efforts earned her several accolades, including the Order of P.E.I. and various medals recognizing her contributions to social justice and environmental protection.
Apart from her advocacy work, Burge was known for her infectious laughter and humility. She always downplayed her own role in the progress of the province, emphasizing that the work belonged to the collective community. Her passing was deeply mourned by the P.E.I. community, with the New Democratic Party acknowledging her as a beacon of positivity and change.
Marie Burge’s legacy as a social justice champion and community advocate will continue to inspire generations to come.
