European leaders gathered in Kyiv on Monday to celebrate Ukraine’s Independence Day amidst Russia’s ongoing invasion. U.K. Prime Minister Andy Burnham, attending his first international trip as prime minister, joined other European leaders and dignitaries in Kyiv, including European Council President Antonio Costa.
Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha emphasized the significance of independence for Ukraine, stating that the country has fiercely defended it. The Ukrainian people voted for independence in 1991, but Russian President Vladimir Putin’s aim in starting a conflict in February 2022 was to align Kyiv with Moscow.
Burnham chaired a meeting of the Coalition of the Willing, a group supporting Ukraine against Russia’s aggression. He urged British industry to assist a Ukrainian project developing an alternative to the U.S.-made Patriot air defense systems. The leaders pledged additional military and financial aid to Ukraine.
Burnham announced that the U.K. government permitted defense company MBDA to disclose classified information related to British components used in the SCALP long-range missile. This move could facilitate France and Ukraine’s collaboration on local production of the weapon.
Ukrainian President Zelenskyy stressed the importance of foreign support in the face of the conflict, emphasizing the need for allies. The Kremlin expressed strong disapproval of Britain’s involvement in supporting Ukraine, mentioning potential consequences.
The ongoing conflict has led to escalating aerial attacks, causing civilian casualties and infrastructure damage. In a recent incident, three teenagers were killed in Krasnodar, Russia, as Ukraine targeted warehouses in southern Russia. The warring nations continue to engage in long-range strikes to inflict economic harm and disrupt military operations.
Russia has received support from North Korea and China, while utilizing Iran’s drones. The conflict shows no signs of resolution, with both countries locked in a cycle of violence and retaliation.
