Fernie has initiated the construction of a specialized fire station to enhance the safety and efficiency of firefighters. A groundbreaking event was conducted on Tuesday for the new fire hall located at 1500 5th Ave. within Prentice Park. The city anticipates that firefighters will occupy the new facility by fall 2027.
According to Fire Chief Brendan Morgan, Fernie firefighters are currently operating from temporary facilities at the public works yard, leading to delays in responding to emergencies. The new fire hall aims to provide more space for vehicles, improved training areas, and designated zones to separate contaminated gear from clean spaces where firefighters engage in activities.
Morgan emphasized the importance of having distinct clean and ‘dirty’ areas within the fire hall to prevent the spread of carcinogens and other hazardous materials brought back by firefighters after responding to calls. Additionally, the new facility will house an emergency operations center for coordinating responses during wildfires and other crises.
The decision to construct the fire hall followed extensive discussions on its location. While some residents, like Bill Sailer, expressed concerns about the chosen site in Prentice Park, Mayor Nic Milligan defended the choice, citing its suitability in terms of size, accessibility, and meeting the operational requirements of the firefighters.
The city secured $7 million in funding for the project through the Strategic Priorities Fund, eliminating the need for a full borrowing bylaw. Mayor Milligan commended the perseverance of the council and city staff in navigating the lengthy process to bring the project to fruition. The new fire hall, although not immediately increasing the number of career firefighters, is seen as vital for preparing the department to adapt to the evolving needs of Fernie’s growing community.
