The Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) have deemed the circumstances surrounding the death of a four-year-old girl and the severe injuries sustained by two toddlers at a residence in southern Manitoba as suspicious.
Officers from the Manitoba First Nations Police Service responded to a call at a home in Long Plain First Nation following reports from first responders about a young child in medical distress with injuries around 8 a.m. on Sunday, as stated in an RCMP news release on Tuesday.
Upon arrival, authorities found the four-year-old deceased at the scene. Two other children, aged one and two, were also present in the home and were subsequently transported to the hospital. One child was in critical condition while the other was stable; both have since improved to a stable condition.
Due to the suspicious nature of the four-year-old’s death and the serious injuries sustained by the other two children, the RCMP has assumed control of the investigation. Supt. Rob Lasson, who oversees Manitoba RCMP major crime services, expressed deep concern over the incident and emphasized the community’s quest for clarity on the events within the household.
Lasson assured residents of Long Plain that the RCMP is collaborating closely with the Manitoba First Nations Police Service and local community leaders in the ongoing investigation.
