Liberal Member of Parliament Shaun Chen has announced his resignation at the end of this week, citing ongoing health issues resulting from a car accident last year. Representing Scarborough North since 2015, Chen revealed that the accident left him with severe health challenges, impeding his ability to fulfill his parliamentary duties in Ottawa regularly.
“After careful consideration with my family, I have concluded that stepping down as a Member of Parliament is the best course of action for me,” stated Chen in a social media post.
Before entering federal politics, Chen held the position of Chair of the Toronto District School Board. Prime Minister Mark Carney expressed gratitude for Chen’s efforts in advocating for youth and combating racism, wishing him a speedy recovery and success in his future endeavors.
Chen joins a growing list of MPs resigning this summer, including former Liberal cabinet minister Steven Guilbeault and Conservative MP Cathay Wagantall. Conservative MP Larry Brock is set to leave his position in mid-September for a role at the Brantford Crown attorney’s office, while NDP MP Alexandre Boulerice intends to vacate his Montreal seat to pursue a provincial candidacy with Québec Solidaire in October.
Chen’s resignation is scheduled for Saturday.
