A hiker who went missing while hiking in Brazil was miraculously found alive after five days without a phone or food. Roberto Farias Tomaz, 19, was separated from his friend on the trail to Pico Paraná, the highest mountain in southern Brazil, on January 1. He walked approximately 20km alone through the woods until he arrived at a farm in Cacatu, Antonina on Monday, where he borrowed a phone to contact his sister.
Roberto, who had no phone or significant food and water supplies, was rescued and taken to the hospital for evaluation. In an emotional interview, he shared his fears and determination to survive, expressing gratitude for the support he received during the search efforts involving over 100 firefighters and 300 volunteers.
Despite initial doubts about being found, Roberto kept his faith and persevered until he reached safety. Following medical assessments revealing minor injuries, Roberto expressed profound appreciation for the rescue teams, volunteers, and his family for their unwavering support.
Reunited with his family in Pinhais, Roberto’s loved ones shared their relief and gratitude, thanking everyone involved in the search. The Governor of Paraná commended the rescue operation, emphasizing the collaborative efforts that led to Roberto’s safe return. The State Secretary of Public Security highlighted the importance of teamwork and volunteer support in the successful outcome of the search and rescue mission.
