Retired couple finds adventure in home-sitting

A retired couple, Barbara and Lawrence Blackwood, aged 72 and 75, have shared their experience of home-sitting to stay active during their retirement. Home-sitting involves taking care of someone’s residence while they are away, which sometimes includes looking after their pets. Barbara, a former administrative secretary, and Lawrence, a retired police officer, now engage in approximately one home sit per month, amounting to nearly half of the year away from their own home.

According to Barbara, they chose home-sitting post-retirement to stay engaged and active. Home-sitters typically earn a minimum of £333.06 for a two-week assignment without pets. Taking care of two dogs and a cat during the same period pays around £367.92. The responsibilities involve about one hour and 45 minutes of daily tasks, along with a daily food allowance. Additionally, travel expenses for initial meetings and journeys to and from assignments are covered.

Living in Perthshire, Scotland, home-sitting has also helped the couple save on utility bills, especially during the colder months. Barbara estimated savings of approximately £47 per month during a winter assignment spanning three to four weeks. From September to April, they save an average of £31 monthly.

Barbara highlighted that travel expenses are reimbursed, which they often set aside for vacations. They also receive a daily food allowance and a modest payment for assignments, with potential extra compensation based on duties like the number of pets involved. While on assignments, they tend to spend less, mainly focusing on pet care.

The couple has explored various locations in Scotland through home-sitting assignments, offering them a unique travel experience. Lawrence emphasized the flexibility and diversity of home-sitting, making it a special experience. Their primary motivation remains the well-being of the pets they care for, ensuring they feel safe and comfortable in their usual routines.

After nearly ten years of home-sitting, they have built lasting relationships with families who continue to welcome them back for repeat assignments. Barbara expressed their satisfaction with the lifestyle home-sitting has provided, stating that they have never regretted their decision.
