Lindsey Vonn has emotionally shared that she has been discharged from the hospital after suffering a severe leg injury during the Winter Olympics. Vonn was airlifted to the hospital while participating in the downhill event in Italy following an ACL injury.
After undergoing multiple surgeries, Vonn was initially released from the hospital in Italy to return to the United States for further medical care. In an Instagram post, she detailed the injuries she sustained, including compartment syndrome and a broken ankle, praising her surgeon for saving her leg from amputation.
Describing her injuries in a video on Instagram, Vonn explained the complexities of her tibia fracture, fibula head fracture, and compartment syndrome, where excess blood accumulation causes tissue damage. She credited Dr. Tom Hackett for performing a successful fasciotomy to save her leg.
Expressing gratitude for Dr. Hackett’s intervention, Vonn reflected on the timing of her ACL tear, which led to the life-saving surgery. Despite a longer hospital stay due to low hemoglobin levels from surgeries, she received a blood transfusion that improved her condition and allowed her to be discharged.
Currently confined to a wheelchair due to a broken ankle, Vonn looks forward to progressing to crutches in the coming weeks. She anticipates a lengthy recovery process, including potential future surgeries to address her ACL and remove metal implants.
In a lengthy caption accompanying the video, Vonn outlined her recovery timeline and expressed optimism for the healing process ahead. She acknowledged the challenges faced during the injury but remains determined to overcome them through rehabilitation and eventual surgery.
Vonn’s message conveyed her relief at leaving the hospital and her commitment to the arduous journey to full recovery.
