A teenager who survived a devastating fire in a Swiss ski resort had to use a table as a makeshift battering ram to escape, while sadly, his friends are either deceased or missing.
The fire broke out at Le Constellation bar in Crans-Montana, Switzerland, early in the morning, causing flames to engulf the establishment. Over 100 individuals were injured as they became trapped inside, prompting desperate attempts to break free and survive.
Sixteen-year-old Axel Clavier, one of the survivors, recounted having to break a window frame to flee the inferno. Using a table, he pushed a plexiglass window out, enabling his escape from the chaotic scene inside the bar. Tragically, Axel was the sole member of his group to make it out unscathed, as his companions perished or went missing.
Axel mentioned losing one friend, with “two or three” others unaccounted for. He observed waitresses carrying champagne bottles and speakers into the bar before the fire erupted.
Another individual, who chose to remain anonymous, also shared his harrowing experience of being trapped inside the bar. He described the confusion and darkness caused by the smoke, expressing uncertainty about finding a way out. Eventually, he broke a window and managed to escape, albeit with his clothing partially burnt.
Recalling the intense situation, he reflected on the loss of friends and the necessity of using a table for protection before fleeing the blaze. The witness also noted the presence of waitresses with champagne bottles and flares that were dangerously close to the ceiling, leading to the rapid spread of the fire.
Swiss President Guy Parmelin described the tragedy as one of the nation’s most severe incidents, acknowledging the profound impact on survivors whose lives have been forever altered. He extended condolences to the victims and their families during this difficult time.
