“Historic Vondelkerk Church Engulfed in Flames on New Year’s Eve”

Devastating video footage captured the moment when flames engulfed the historic Vondelkerk church in Amsterdam during the New Year’s Eve celebrations. The 19th Century church, built in 1880 near Vondelpark, caught fire around 12:45 am, with the tower collapsing shortly after 1 am, raising concerns about the fire spreading to nearby buildings.

As smoke and debris posed a threat to locals, numerous nearby homes were evacuated. James Pearson, 39, who recorded the fire, was celebrating the new year with friends when the blaze broke out. He documented the tower’s collapse and the efforts of emergency crews to control the flames. The cause of the fire remains unknown, although local reports suggest a firework may have been responsible for igniting the building.

Despite significant damage to the tower, including the loss of its central portion and most of the roof, the side walls remain standing. James, a researcher at the University of Amsterdam, recalled how they heard about the fire during a New Year’s party and went to witness the unfolding events.

Reports indicate that the fire brigade faced challenges due to strong winds hampering their firefighting efforts. However, they confirmed that there is no immediate risk of further collapse, even though the roof caved in during the blaze.
