UK Braces for Major Snowstorm and Freezing Rain

A unique and perilous weather event is expected to affect certain regions of the nation as forecasts indicate a significant snowstorm approaching. According to the GFS weather model, all counties in the UK are likely to witness snowfall as flurries move across the country in the early days of the upcoming month. The data indicates snowfall from January 4 to January 7, impacting key cities such as London, Cardiff, Belfast, Birmingham, Manchester, Liverpool, Newcastle, Edinburgh, and Glasgow.

By the evening of January 7, snow coverage maps suggest that almost every part of the country could experience snow accumulation. However, certain areas may face a hazardous weather phenomenon that the Met Office describes as “extremely risky.”

Highlighted in orange on the maps are regions where “freezing rain” is expected on January 7. The forecast predicts freezing rain beginning in Scotland during the early hours and potentially reaching the Midlands and parts of Wales by midday. Subsequently, it might move to East Anglia and Bedfordshire by around 9 pm.

Freezing rain, as defined by the Met Office, is an uncommon form of liquid precipitation that freezes rapidly upon contact with a cold surface. This phenomenon occurs when snow transitions into rain in warmer air before encountering colder air again.

The droplets become “supercooled,” maintaining a sub-zero temperature while in liquid form. Upon contact with the cold ground, the droplets instantly freeze, creating a layer of clear ice. This process is what gives freezing rain its name.

Freezing rain poses various risks, including the potential for tree and power line damage due to the weight of the ice. It also transforms roads and walkways into slippery surfaces akin to ice rinks. The Met Office warns that freezing rain can be particularly dangerous for aircraft operations.

The Met Office anticipates wintry conditions at the beginning of January, with the possibility of snow affecting even low-lying areas. The weather forecast for January 1 to 10 indicates that a low-pressure system moving through the North Sea initially will bring rain and showers southward across the UK.

Subsequently, high pressure is likely to be centered to the northwest with low pressure to the east, leading to a cold, showery, northerly flow for a period. While this may result in generally settled weather, wintry hazards, including potential snow at lower elevations in north-facing coastal regions, may arise.

Showers are expected to extend inland periodically, accompanied by windy spells and longer periods of rain. Overall, the period is forecasted to be drier than average, with temperatures expected to remain below average for much of the time, possibly transitioning to near or above average later on.
