Thousands of households in the UK are set to receive a complimentary credit of £150 from their energy provider during this month. Utilita has commenced the distribution of the Warm Home Discount funds to smart prepay customers starting January 7, aiming to complete all payments by the month’s end.
The Warm Home Discount, valued at £150, will be credited directly to the electricity account of eligible households, rather than provided as a cash sum. To qualify for this benefit, households must have had someone claiming certain specified benefits on the qualifying date, which varies annually.
For this winter, the qualifying date was August 24, 2025. To receive the Warm Home Discount for this year, individuals must have been claiming one of the listed benefits on this date. If residing in England or Wales, the discount is automatic. In Scotland, automatic payment is only applicable if the Guarantee Credit element of Pension Credit is received. For other qualifying benefits, manual application is necessary by contacting the energy supplier. Notably, there is no Warm Home Discount scheme in Northern Ireland.
The Department for Energy Security and Net Zero (DESNZ) has recently announced the removal of the high energy use criterion for the Warm Home Discount in England and Wales. Previously, applicants had to demonstrate high energy costs for benefits other than Pension Credit, a requirement now eliminated.
DESNZ estimates that the total number of households benefiting from the discount could potentially increase by 2.7 million, reaching an estimated 6.1 million. Meanwhile, energy bills have risen once more, with the Ofgem price cap rising to £1,758 for a typical dual fuel household on a standard variable rate tariff. This cap sets limits on charges for gas and electricity units, along with fixed daily standing charges for connection to the energy network.
It is important to note that while there is a price cap in place, energy bills are still based on actual consumption of gas and electricity. The price cap amount indicates the expected annual payment for an individual with average energy consumption.
