Tragic Flu-Related Death of 11-Year-Old Boy

An 11-year-old boy tragically passed away from a severe case of the flu before getting the chance to unwrap his Christmas gifts. Jace Watkins succumbed to the flu on Saturday, December 27, after being diagnosed earlier in the month and rushed to the hospital in critical condition following a seizure on December 20.

Despite no underlying health issues, Jace, who was a premature baby and used inhalers in the past, was put on a ventilator with uncertain brain activity. His aunt, Sabrina Parsons, shared that he appeared fine before suddenly falling ill.

A GoFundMe campaign set up while Jace was undergoing treatment raised over $9,800, surpassing the $5,000 goal initially meant for medical expenses. The fundraiser remains open to provide support for medical bills and funeral costs. His school headteacher, Cari McClellan, expressed grief over the loss, describing Jace as a bright light with a warm smile that will be dearly missed.

Hueytown Intermediate School, where Jace was a fifth-grade student, mourned his passing on Facebook, highlighting the profound impact he had on those around him. A prayer vigil was held for Jace on December 23, emphasizing the community’s belief in the healing power of prayers during his ICU battle against the flu.

Statistics from the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention indicate approximately 28,000 flu-related deaths during the 2023-2024 season, predominantly affecting older adults.
