The way UK households communicate with friends and family is set to undergo a significant transformation. Starting in January of the upcoming year, consumers nationwide will transition from the traditional copper-wire phone lines, known as the Public Switched Telephone Network (PSTN), to a new technology known as Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP).
VoIP represents a more modern system that utilizes an internet connection for making phone calls instead of the conventional analog wiring. Despite initial concerns, there are substantial benefits to embracing this shift away from copper cables.
Users of VoIP will enjoy enhanced call quality, increased reliability in connections, and additional features such as spam call protection and call forwarding capabilities.
Although the transition has been in the works for some time, it appears that a significant portion of the population remains unaware of the impending switchover.
According to a recent report from the telecoms team at Phonely, 58.7% of UK adults aged over 50 are uninformed about the planned discontinuation of traditional landlines, despite ongoing alerts from the industry and the extended deadline until January 31, 2027.
The company cautions that this lack of awareness could lead to a surge in last-minute upgrades in 2026, resulting in potential issues such as equipment shortages, delays in installations in rural areas, engineer backlogs, and increased strain on telecommunication providers.
“With less than a year remaining until the permanent shutdown of the UK’s analog landline network, new research indicates that millions of individuals over 50 are still unaware of this impending change,” Phonely stated.
For many older households that prioritize stability and dependability, this transition signifies a significant adjustment. As the 2027 deadline approaches, experts advise against delaying the switch.
“The extension to 2027 has fostered a false sense of security,” remarked Bryn Thompson, Director at Phonely.
“The fact that nearly six out of ten individuals over 50 are unaware of this transition should raise concerns for all stakeholders. Waiting until compelled to make the change risks a chaotic situation at the final hour.”
Dan Skipper, Chief Executive of Age UK Norwich, added: “These alterations raise numerous questions for residents, and a lack of awareness could cause undue worry, especially for older individuals who are not online and rely on their landline for social connections and safety. Consult your telephone provider to understand the transition options available and ensure they are informed if you utilize a telecare alarm or require additional assistance.”
